a dark spring

Scaling Up After a long hiatus from writing here--and after ridding previous posts of some interloping, product-hawking commenters--I'll share a few brief bits. Last fall, I began exploring making larger works--which for me means "medium-sized" pieces ranging from 24"x18" to 30"x22" so far. With a studio as tiny as mine, sparse storage space is a determinant for the sizes and substrates that I choose.
Black Flowers Using hand-cut stencils and scissors, I've been incorporating simple, five-petaled flower images into my collages and paintings. They are usually dark, even black. Metaphors, maybe, for our troubled time on this Earth, when fossil fuel extraction and combustion continues despite evidence of the irreversible biological tipping points our species is inflicting on our gorgeous, wounded home.
And Yet, Spring Garden and studio vie for my attention: what a beautiful, privileged conundrum to experience. Onward, onward!
